Fire Island is a narrow sliver of a barrier island protecting the southern coast of Long Island, New York from the Atlantic Ocean. The island is seperated from the mainland by the Great South Bay which is around 4 miles wide at its widest point. Fire Island is home to almost twenty communities along its 30 miles of pristene beaches, all of which are accessible almost exclusively by ferry. Most of the island is part of the Fire Island National Seashore.
Fire Island is home to two predominantly gay communities, Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines. The Grove, the Pines and the mile of woods and dunes between them have been a haven for this country's gay community for two generations or more.
The photographs in this collection were taken in and around Cherry Grove, the Pines and their beaches over the last several years. They are an attempt to capture the beauty, freedom, comradery and fun-loving attitudes of the gay community on Fire Island. The subjects are friends we have met on Fire Island and friends who have visited us there. Other photos from this portfolio have been included in calendars published at FireIslandMen.com.
